For the Lion: Holding the Line

Hi all it's Neil here with a new post for my For The Lion series showing my latest unit of Intercessors and some pictures from my first game post codex supplement. These Intercessors help build up the core of my Dark Angels force. Intercessors form a good core able to shoot well, fight in melee and control objectives though they're not the best at any being generalists rather than specialists.

These are painted up in the standard green colours with the 4th company markings on the knee pads though I haven't put on their transfers on to show their squad designation and numbers.  For this unit I decided on arming them with the Auto Bolt Rifles to have a unit that can move up easier to take the mid field objectives and given the Sergeant a Power Sword like a good Dark Angel.

I've set up a Crusade force with my Dark Angels that has no played its second game down my local gaming club that recently reopened for in person gaming (the first game was played vs Tom around a year ago at my house).  For my crusade force I have the following

  • Primaris Lieutenant Korahael Oathsworn
  • Intercessor Squad Estrael
  • Intercessor Squad Ardaral
  • Assault Intercessor Squad Heduel
  • Eradicator Squad Nassir
  • Librarian Idrik Kybalos
    • Librarian in Phobos Armour
  • Ravenwing Outrider Squad Aloceri
  • Ravenwing Black Knight Squad Astathor
  • Interrogator Chaplain Zerachiel Voham
    • Interrogator Chaplain in Terminator Armour
  • Deathwing Bladeguard Veteran Squad Seraphus
  • Deathwing Terminator Squad Iaoth

For my Requisition Points I have used 2 to give Korahael and Zerachiel a Warlord Trait each then 3 were used to increase my Supply Limit to fit all these units in.  For the latest game it was a 50 power game against Iron Warriors.  I took a balanced force with mostly the Greenwing units supported by the Ravenwing Black Knights and the Deathwing units against an infantry focused Iron Warriors force with a Lord-Discordant and Maulerfiend at the Relic mission.

My force pushed up the centre following the Black Knights who used The Hunt to put themselves on the Relic then boosted forward to engage the enemy when I won the first turn.  It went very well for me with the Black Knights unleashing their Weapons from the Dark Age against the Lord Discordant decapitating the enemy leadership and securing one of my Agendas.  I then took and held the centre for the rest of the game securing the Relic for my crusade force which allowed Korahael to take a Crusade relic.  From this he gained the Halo Indomitus giving him a 4+ Invulnerable Save as well as a 4+ save against Mortal Wounds to boost his survivability.

I also recently did a 2v1 game using a special narrative crusade scenario that I wrote with myself and Medge's Blood Angels taking on Tim's Drukhai trying to defend civilians from the raiders.  The space marines were on the defensive from the start with the Drukhai winning first turn and making good on the advantage.  The space marines held the line as much as possible but the wave attacks of the Drukhai melee troops overwhelmed the defenders pushing them back too much and securing the Dark Eldar the win.

After this game I boosted by Supply Limit twice and added a Relic Contemptor to the roster as well as the assault intercessors being swapped for Heavy Intercessors to provide more of a fire base for the specialist wings to operate around.

I really enjoy the Crusade format allowing me to follow my strike force of Dark Angels as they respond to calls for help and hunt down rumors of the Fallen.  I'd like to take them into a narrative campaign at some point too down the gaming club so I might need to work out a good way to run a map based system to do this.

I hope this was interesting and if its off interest I can do more posts about the Dark Angels as they crusade as well as my other thoughts on Crusade and any things I come up with for using them in a Narrative Campaign.  If you want to see more of my Dark Angels you can check out the rest of the For the Lion series.  I also have an Instagram to which I post pictures of my hobby with most being WIP pictures of my painting but also gaming and other related things.  See you again soon!
