Tournament Operations: Winter Assault 2019 AAR, Cambridge; 30th November

Hi all, so a couple of weeks ago I had the Winter Assault 2019 in Cambridge, this was a kind of ITC-lite style one day tournament with 14 players on the day with three rounds where you were matched against similarly scoring players in rounds 2 and 3. The list I took was my Ultramarines with the exact list being found in the previous Tournament Operations post.



My first game was against a chaos space marine list running a black legion spearhead with Abaddon, havoc and obliterators and a red corsairs battalion with a Lord Discordant and two mauler fiends backed up by some chaos space marine squads and a noctolith crown.  The game went pretty well as I was able to systematically remove threats before they could do too much damage and take the objectives which mean that I ended up being 30-3 after wiping out the chaos forces.  Both the leviathan and repulsor executioner did really well as expected but the two eliminator squads did really well too putting a lot of hurt onto the two mauler fiends and helping to demolish the noctolith crown.

My second game was against a ork horde that had 3 battalions filled with ork boyz and gretchin with the big threats being 10 mek guns, 15 lootas and 2 big meks with shokk-attakk gunz.  This game went less well, the shear amount of shooting was hard to weather but i managed to deploy then redeploy using the Ultramarines stratagem to reduce as much incoming fire from the mek gunz in the first turn and then took out a good number.  I ended up losing this game 15-31 but it was close and it did highlight two things that my list is needing firstly the ability to target characters and secondly a bit more anti-horde firepower.

My last game was against a necron player with lots of immortals, destroyers, heavy destroyers and wraiths.  I managed to weather his first turn charge with the wraiths against the majority of my intercessors and wipe them out in my turn followed by methodically taking out units starting with the destroyers.  This game was very casualty heavy on both sides even with the 3+ armor across the board due to the high AP values.  I ended up winning the game 28-21.

With two wins and a loss I managed to end up coming 2nd as I scored high in all my games even when I lost, with the ork player who I lost too winning the event overall, so a pretty good first outing for my proper Ultramarines list.  I have learn a couple of things that I'm looking to change with the list, I need some anti-character ability and some more anti-horde so I'm going to try out the below iteration in my next event (assuming I get it all built and painted in time) especially with the increase if the points for 2020 GT season increasing to 2000 from 1750:
