Warbands of the Bloodwind Spoil: The Iron Golems, by Medge

From the moment it was first announced Warcry had me hooked in. For years I've been I've been saying the Mortal Realms needs more mortals! Age of Sigmar is a great game, but it's often played as battles between Demi-gods and daemons, immortals and monster. The mortals of the mortal realms are left cowering in the novels, taking no active part in the game itself.
So the launch of Warcry, and the representation of the morals of the realms on the tabletop, was a great thing.

After a few tentative games in the Bloodwind Spoil with existing factions I own (thanks to the Warcry expansions for AoS armies) I've bitten the bullet and painted my own Warcry Warband; the Iron Golems!

The Iron Golems

Warcry offers some great models that offer an alternative perspective on worshipers of the Ruinous Powers. In some ways these models typify the existing Chaos range; the brutal, savage looking weapons and the aggressive and violent poses. But in many ways they don't.
Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh and Nurgle have such iconic aesthetics, and whislt these Warcry Warbands are all evidently Chaotic they lack any of the signifies of the four gods, offering a window into how the common man or woman in the Mortal Realms can fall from hero to villain.

Many of the Warbands appealed to me. The clean, noble style of the Cypher Lords and the tribal, totemic look of the Corvus Cabal both stood out as favourites, but in the end I settled for the Iron Golems.

As a former Chaos player, favouring Khorne, I could immediately see these guys as the prelude to a devastating Khorne army; iron shod, implacable murderers.
The lack of any faces on the models (all hidden by Iron grills) added to the villainous appeal of the Warband, and I had to snatch some up.

With Lockdown still in force I've been hopping through projects pretty quickly, and decided to add the Iron Golems to my painting pile.

Once I'd put paint to plastic I found I couldn't stop - these guys were a joy to paint.

Painting Style

I tried something a bit different with these models, aiming for red metallic armour edged with bronze.
This was achieved by basecoating all the armour panels scales with Balthasar Gold, shading with Agrax Earthshade and drybrushing with Gehenna's Gold. Once that was dry I applied Blood Angels Red contrast over all the armour panels, leaving the trims bronze.
I then followed up by picking out the chain-mail, piercings/ studs and weapons in Leadbelcher, followed by a Nuln Oil wash and a Stormhost Silver Drybrush

For skin tones I opted for something different, leaning on contrast to do the work for me.
The skin tones I usually paint are very... monotone. I usually only paint Caucasian skin which is something I'm looking to change, to make my forces look more diverse and more realistic.
having lived their former life in the sun-kissed realm of Metal it's pretty unlikely these guys would be white-skinned after all!

The human skin tone was achieved using a coat of Wyldwood contrast over Grey Seer.

For the Ogor, a likely slave, I used Guilliman Flesh contrast over Grey Seer.

For the Chaos Dwarf I wanted that ash/ coal look for the skin, so tried a thinned down Black Templar contrast over Grey Seer. I think it's turned out pretty well.

For the bases I wanted that broken/ cracked earth look associated with the Bloodwind spoil. I based the based with XV88, followed by a layer of Agrellan Earth, a wash of Agrax Earthshade and a drybrush of Ushabti bone. Final touches were the grass tuffs and a splattering of Blood for the Blood God!

Hopefully when it's safe to go back and socialise I'll give these guys a good run through their paces, and maybe even play my way through their Campaign. It'll be good to experience Warcry in all it's glory before Wave 2 comes out!

'till next time! Stay safe all!
